What Essential Oils Help the Gallbladder?
I received a phone call at the office from a customer who asked a really direct question: "What essential oils can help support the gallbladder?"
I was grateful she called and we had a wonderful conversation. In that conversation I shared some possible options that could be helpful, but I feel this deserves more as I believe many of you may have this same question. My name is Gavin Poulton. I am a Certified Aromatherapist and the founder of Restore Hope Oils. I have spent over 16 years working with essential oils to support liver health — including managing my own diagnosis of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis, a chronic liver and bile duct condition. So when someone asks me about the liver or gallbladder, it is personal.
Let's get into it.
The short answer first.
The gallbladder and liver work as one system. The liver produces bile. The gallbladder stores and releases it. If one is struggling, the other feels it. This is why I have always formulated for both together — because that is how I see them.
But I have also always worked under the understanding that the gallbladder responds better to gentleness than intensity. Generally the liver can handle a more stimulating approach. The gallbladder needs calming, anti-inflammatory support that encourages bile flow without forcing it.
So here is what we discussed:
For nighttime support, we discussed the One Tap Detox PM applied topically over the gallbladder and liver area. The PM was formulated for gentle repair — anti-inflammatory oils that calm tissue and encourage bile flow during the body's natural overnight window. You can also use it during the day over the same area if you want that calming support throughout.
For daytime support, we discussed Pure Happy because of the Lemon. Most people associate gallbladder support with Lemon, and for good reason — Lemon's d-limonene content has documented choleretic (bile-stimulating) properties. Pure Happy also contains Lime, which shares that same d-limonene foundation, along with Peppermint, which is one of the most research-backed oils for bile flow. Pure Happy was my recommendation on the call. But as you will see, the research led me to a different answer.
Now here is what happened after we hung up.
Something about her question stayed with me. I have always formulated for the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts as one system — because that is how they function. But I had this feeling there was more to explore. So I went back and looked at each oil in the One Tap Detox PM through that narrower lens — not just liver support broadly, but gallbladder support specifically.
What I found confirmed something I had instinctively built into the PM blend years ago. But it also led me somewhere I did not expect — and I will get to that in a moment. First, let me show you what each oil in the PM brings to the gallbladder specifically:
Helichrysum — This is classified in European phytotherapy as both a choleretic (stimulates bile production) and a cholagogue (promotes gallbladder contraction to release bile). Research published in the journal Molecules confirmed its hepatoprotective properties and its ability to stimulate bile production. Treating gallbladder disorders is a traditional use of Helichrysum across Europe. This oil is also one of the best for reducing inflammation in the gallbladder area — which is exactly what you want during the overnight repair window.
Geranium — Contains geranyl acetate, which was tested for choleretic activity in foundational research by Trabace et al. (1994) alongside menthol. Multiple sources describe Geranium as dilating the biliary ducts, allowing the liver and gallbladder to release toxins more effectively. It also supports emotional processing — and in TCM, the liver and gallbladder hold frustration and resentment. No supplement can address that. An essential oil can.
Rosemary — Research from the Journal of Biomedical Science showed that Rosemary stimulates bile production while supporting phase I and II liver enzymes. A separate study in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine confirmed it protects the liver by activating natural defense mechanisms. It has been used for centuries as a bile-supporting oil.
Mandarin (Red) — Contains d-limonene, which is classified as a choleretic in French aromatherapy pharmacology. Japanese studies have shown limonene supports bile flow. Mandarin also serves as a gentle liver decongestant — and that calming quality is exactly what the gallbladder needs, especially at night.
I did not formulate the PM for the gallbladder alone. I formulated it for the liver and gallbladder as one system. But when I went back and laid out each oil individually, every one of them has specific gallbladder and biliary support documented in the research. That gave me even more confidence in what I already believed about this blend.
Here is where it gets interesting.
Where I was intuitively accurate on the PM, the research also showed me something I want to pass along to her and to you. If a person were to choose not to use the PM both day and night, I would suggest that I Am Restored may actually be a better daily option than Pure Happy specifically for gallbladder health. I Am Restored contains Peppermint — one of the most research-backed choleretics in aromatherapy — along with Orange which provides the same d-limonene as Lemon, Rosemary for bile production and liver enzyme support, and Ginger which increases bile secretion and supports fat digestion. That is four oils with documented gallbladder affinity in one blend, with more appropriate ratios of each — a better balanced blend for gallbladder support as opposed to a mostly d-limonene heavy blend found in Pure Happy.
Pure Happy still works well — especially if for any reason Rosemary is not for you. But looking at this through the lens of gallbladder health specifically, I Am Restored is the more solid option.
I believe anyone can sense the right oils if they are in the right space mentally and emotionally open. That intuition is something I trust, and I think you can learn to trust it in yourself too. But I also believe in going back and doing the homework — and I am glad I did.
One more thing about timing.
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the gallbladder has its own active repair window: 11 PM to 1 AM. The liver follows at 1 AM to 3 AM. Again, I see them as one system moving through two phases of repair. If you are not asleep before 11 PM, your gallbladder may not get the environment it needs to do its work. This is one reason I always encourage an earlier bedtime — your body has a schedule, and these organs are counting on you to honor it.
This is also why the One Tap Detox PM applied after dinner makes so much sense for gallbladder support. You are giving the oils time to absorb and begin working before that repair window opens.
So if you have been wondering about gallbladder support — or if you have had yours removed and want to help your body manage bile flow on its own — the One Tap Detox PM over the liver and gallbladder area is where I would start. Pair it with I Am Restored during the day. Consistency is what matters most.
Your body knows what to do. We help it remember.
